Italy’s anti-mafia operation targets 42 suspects

ROME, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) — An anti-mafia operation in Italy targeted 42 suspects and seized over 1 million euros (1.1 million U.S. dollars) in assets, local media reported on Tuesday.
All the suspects have been charged with mafia association, drug trafficking, extortion, money laundering, and other crimes, according to state-run Rai News 24.
The operation, conducted by Italy’s special military police, the Carabinieri, was overseen by prosecutors in Caserta, north of Naples, in coordination with the local anti-mafia district directorate. It followed an investigation that began in 2021.
Of the 42 suspects targeted, 32 were taken into custody, three were placed under house arrest, and seven were subjected to a residence restrictive order, according to the Agi news agency. ■
